Last month Elliot Richmond hosted a Show & Tell at the @wpchelt meetup. There was an interesting mix of fairly technical show & tell talks by speakers from around the country.

Rich Bell demoed Ray and Background WordPress processing. Mark Wilkinson demoed his Just In Time CSS, I (Herb Miller) talked about 3 plugins I wrote to help visualise my server side performance, Elliott showed us how to run Xdebug, setting breakpoints, watching variables and changing values on the fly, Ross Wintle demoed his new spam pixel plugin to block spam bot’s comments, Keith Devon showed us his work on CSS grid for block based themes, and we ran out of time before Jonny Allbut had a chance to show his latest work with template parts ( PHP version not FSE ).

As I said, most of these talks were fairly technical, but yours doesn’t have to be.

  • Jonny Allbut – Using template parts efficiently, when building WordPress themes.
  • Andrew Leonard – Using TablePress, plugins, bespoke plugins and a custom child theme to build the Ferns of Macaronesia website.
  • Simon Bragg – Writing for the web
  • Ruby McCarthy– Converting from HTML to a spiffing block editor WP site
  • Reserve: Herb Miller – What’s going on? Does my site run slow with this?

The Show and Tell sessions were recorded. Separate videos will be produced for Jonny’s, Andrew’s and Simon’s talks.

Attendee’s introductions – an example

Attendees introductions are optional. If you do tell us about yourself then we’ll get a better understanding of your WordPress knowledge and how you use it. Here’s what I might say.

I’m Herb Miller, the initiating organiser of WP-Pompey. I started using WordPress about 11 years ago. I’m a (retired) software engineer. I mostly develop WordPress plugins. Recently I’ve become very interested in the Gutenberg block editor’s work on Full Site Editing, which is still very much under construction. I’ve developed two experimental FSE themes, Fizzie and SB, which I use to display the contents of online catalogues. I live in Rowlands Castle with my wife Susan and two cats, Bramble and Marmalade.
